Halo in season

Well, well, well, look who decided to come into season.  In all honesty, if she had come in any earlier, we aren’t sure how we would have handled it!  Jenny started the new job in April and things ramped up quickly.  We had planned to breed Halo at this cycle and were narrowing down the gentlemen suitors, but we kinda had an epiphany.  We were pouring over pedigrees and photographs and Marc just looked up at Jenny and said, “I don’t think we should breed Halo.  If anything happened to her during the process, I’d be devastated.”

Breeding is a huge decision.  I’m not sure people realize the huge responsibilities your breeder goes through for you.  When they breed their girl, they put her life on the line…for you!  We’ve heard about bitches contracting pyometra, needing an emergency c-section, and even dying.  Super sad, right?  Then on top of that there could be complications with a puppy and they might not make it to the 10 week mark to go home with their new owner.  And if they do make it to their go-home date, as a breeder, you will worry for the life of the puppy that this family you are entrusting with this precious gift will do the best by that puppy for his/her ENTIRE life.

Jenny decided long before Karma turned two that she was never going to be able to breed her and expose her to any unnecessary risks.  Marc coming to the same conclusion about Halo is almost to be expected.  We weren’t ready to keep a puppy, and breeding just to make puppies for other people wasn’t something we could wrap our heads around.  Maybe that’s just for right now or maybe we will come to the same conclusion next year.

For now, check out this goofball in her diapers and wish us luck dealing with the little hussy over the coming weeks!
