Baby Halos’ First Week

Halo snuggled up with Baby Kate

We made it!  One week down!  Jenny is pretty sleep deprived from sleeping in the guest room with Halo.  In all honesty, we probably didn’t need to do this as the puppies at birth were all over a pound.  However, we’ve heard some nightmare stories about the Dam smothering her puppies on accident, so Jenny felt better being in the same room.  It’s amazing how light you sleep when you know you need to listen for any shifting noises.  We’ll just call it feeling deliriously happy 🙂

So, what have we been up to this week?  We spend a lot of time touching and stroking the puppies and having individual cuddle sessions.  It is so amazing getting to hold these babies.  Halo is so great about us holding puppies as long as we stay in the box, otherwise she starts whining!

We also started doing Early Neurological Stimulation on Monday when they were 3 days old.  There is research on how puppies who had ENS from Day 3-16 have:

  • improved cardio vascular performance
  • stronger heart beats
  • stronger adrenal glands
  • more tolerance to stress
  • greater resistance to disease

Sounds pretty good, right?  Here is the research if you want to check it out: https://breedingbetterdogs.com/article/early-neurological-stimulation

We also did the first nail trim which was the MOST TERRIFYING THING EVER!  Holy geez those nails are small.

Finally, we weighed everyone in tonight and they all gained weight every day!  Kate is now 2 lbs, 2 oz; Farrah is 2 lbs, 1 oz; and Bosley is 2 lbs, 3 oz.  This means both girls have already doubled their birth weight!!  So proud!  And they are strong puppies, all able to scoot across the whelping box.  This week they all like sleeping (and sometimes nursing) on their backs best.

Oh, and while all this was happening, Marc also built us a new kitchen table!  Just in time for us to relocate it when we have to build the weaning pen in the kitchen in a few weeks!!
